About Us

Art.sy helps you discover art you’ll love, from works for sale by leading galleries to those on display in museums and private collections.

Art.sy created the Art Genome Project, an ongoing study of the characteristics that distinguish and connect works of original art. Developed in collaboration with Joe Kennedy (CEO of Pandora and the Music Genome Project) and art world professionals (including curators, artists, academics, and art dealers), the Art Genome Project and Art.sy’s proprietary search technology allow Art.sy to make intelligent artwork recommendations based on your personal preferences.

Benefits

Whether you're an experienced or novice collector, here's how you can use Art.sy:

Discover: Explore art and artists ranging from established masters to emerging new talents. While traditional databases require you to know an artist's name to find their work, Art.sy will begin with the name of an artist you know and recommend works by other artists you are likely to love, drawing connections between artists and works based on hundreds of criteria. For example, if a new collector searches for "Andy Warhol" but is only interested in art under $5,000, Art.sy returns works by emerging artists that are influenced by or similar to works by Warhol. Similarly, if an experienced collector searches for "Yves Klein," Art.sy returns any works by Klein as well as, for example, works by Enrico Castellani, an Italian artist connected to Klein.

Learn: Once you’ve discovered something you’re interested in, Art.sy provides the context necessary to understand the work and the artist behind it. Collectors can explore other works by the artist, as well as artist statements, exhibition and publication histories, and other supplementary materials. These resources are created by the artists themselves or their galleries, ensuring that collectors on Art.sy receive authoritative information they can trust.

Connect: At Art.sy, we believe that art is best experienced in person. Once you’ve fully explored a work on Art.sy, click the “Contact” button to request an introduction to the artist or gallery representing the work. With the knowledge and introduction provided by Art.sy, collectors can confidently follow up to learn more, arrange a viewing, and discuss pricing and acquisition.

Art.sy is just getting started. The Art Genome Project continues to improve as our collection grows, with new works added every day. And as more collectors interact with Art.sy, our algorithms use machine learning to process this data and become increasingly intelligent. We welcome you to Art.sy and hope you enjoy your experience!

What kind of art can I find on Art.sy?

Art.sy focuses exclusively on original fine art such as painting, printmaking and photography. Printmaking includes lithographs, relief prints, silk screens, etchings and other intaglio techniques, but does not include mass-market reproductions of an artwork created in other less unique mediums. Accordingly, unlike some other online destinations, we do not offer posters, Iris prints, or giclées. Furthermore, all printmaking and photography must be sold as part of a limited edition of reasonable size.

How does Art.sy guarantee high quality art and artists to its collectors?

Art.sy's art advisors—art historians, critics, and consultants with decades of experience in the art world—recruit distinguished artists and galleries. In turn, these artists invite their most respected colleagues and students to exhibit on Art.sy. This peer selection process enables Art.sy to feature a broad array of high caliber artists. Accordingly, collectors will find works in a wide range of styles and at both ends of the price scale, from established high-profile stars to emerging artists (including recent MFA graduates from top art schools) just beginning their careers.

What categories of artwork does Art.sy encompass? Do you offer more traditional collecting categories and secondary market works?

Art.sy offers artwork in a range of collecting categories in both the primary and secondary markets. Because different collectors prefer to search for artwork using different methods, Art.sy allows you to search using various criteria, including traditional ones such as period/style (e.g. American Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Photorealism), new categories such as stage of an artist's career (ranging from rising stars to mid-career artists and internationally renowned stars), and pragmatic criteria such as size, color, and location.

Why does Art.sy have no .com extension?

Our domain name is short, simple, and easy to remember. We invested in the special 5 letter Art.sy domain because social media greatly favors very short links. Additionally, using Art.sy's URL shortener service, you can easily share artwork you love with your friends via Twitter or Facebook.

Jobs

Art.sy is hiring!

In a sentence, Art.sy is Pandora meets Kayak for the fine art world. Our goal is to disrupt the existing fine art market, and expand it to the 99.9% of Americans who don't buy fine art but spend over $40B on reproductions and mass-produced prints. We will achieve this by providing Kayak-like access to the fine art world, and Pandora-like intelligence to help navigate it.

Art.sy is led by a Princeton University computer science engineer and a former Christie’s executive who launched Christie’s private sales division. Art.sy's advisors include the CEO of Pandora, the former CEO of IconNicholson (before it was acquired by LBi), and leading art world professionals.

Art.sy was selected to present at TechCrunch Disrupt and won the Yahoo! Rookie Disruptor award. Previously Art.sy won 1st place at the Next Gen conference at Stanford and 2nd place and Audience Choice awards at the Princeton Business Plan Competition. As importantly, Zach Klein thinks Art.sy would be a great place to work.
